Happy Easter from the Lithuania Tribune!

As many other Christian celebrations, the roots of Easter date back to celebrations in pagan times, the celebration of the Spring Equinox in this case. It was seen as the revival of nature and alongside it – the revival of dead souls, who were said to linger until the first crash of thunder (a little eery in a contemporary context, but far less so back then).

As in many other countries, Lithuanians paint easter eggs, but these can serve more than just a decorative role! A traditional egg rolling game hearkens back to a time when it was believed that eggs rolling around on the ground would serve to bring back life to the earth.
