Hotel expenses for MPs should be ended, says former minister

There is no need for parliamentarians to stay in the Seimas hotel and parliamentary expenses should be counted as a part of their salary, said former Interior Minister Saulius Skvernelis.

“Members of parliament have to earn and earn enough to afford accommodation rent in Vilnius. It would really cost less to taxpayers than renovation and maintenance of the Soviet-times building,” said Skvernelis.

Skvernelis said it is time to understand that all parliamentarians – both residents of Vilnius who do not live in the hotel as well as people from other cities – are all equal.

He believes the same could be said about the benefits of parliamentary activities.

“They must be included in the parliamentarians‘ salary. Then allow them to spend their money as they wish – for phones, fuel or pencils. Let’s leave it for the MP‘s to deal and do not give them with these pseudo-privileges,” said the former minister.
