Klaipėda State Seaport Authority is considering buying a dredger so it does not have to hire private contractors to dredge the port.
The ship could cost between €25 and 28 million and has already been discussed by the seaport authority, but the purchase still needs to be approved by the government.
The shipping channel is loosing depth even after stronger storms and the bed of the channel needs to be maintained, the port authority says. Klaipėda has been hiring foreign contractors to dredge the channel.
“Dredgers from other countries cannot quickly come to Klaipėda. After more violent storms, when silt covers the bottom of the port, we have to wait for for five days,” said Arvydas Vaitkus, the head of Klaipėda State Seaport Authority.
Klaipėda State Seaport Authority Council members have approved the plan to acquire a modern, 70-metre versatile dredger which could clean the shipping channel and the cargo terminal.
