Latvia’s new parliament speaker chooses Lithuania for her first foreign trip

“My first visit is to Lithuania because we share a common history and cultural ties. Closer cooperation among the Baltic states is one of my priorities, also on the level of interparliamentary relations,” Murniece told Vilnius journalists on Friday after meeting with Lithuania’s Parliamentary Speaker Loreta Graužinienė.

Murniece also applauded Lithuania’s active role in the efforts to help Ukraine. “We hail the active role Lithuania has taken in the settlement of Ukrainian problems. Latvia provides Ukraine with civilian and humanitarian assistance, thus helping the country’s development,” said the Latvian parliamentary speaker, underlining the importance of European countries on the matter.

Speaking about the problems carriers are faced on the Russian border, Murniece replied that Latvia has similar difficulties, therefore, understands the Lithuanian position.

“When it comes to the border, the situation in Latvia is similar. Lithuania was in a similar situation during its (2013 European Union council) presidency, therefore, has some experience, and understand the Lithuanian position perfectly. We also see a possible political component in the Russian actions,” said the Latvian official.

This was Murniece’s first official foreign trip after she was elected as the new parliamentary speaker in early November. Murniece is a member of the conservative National Alliance.
