“We have a proposal to hold joint exercises and use the same weaponry and the same bases,” Defence Minister Juozas Olekas told journalists after the plans were discussed at the government’s meeting on Monday.

According to a report prepared by the Defence Ministry, the three services should be included into national, regional and US-led exercises in effort to “ensure collective readiness of institutions of the interior system to work together with the Lithuanian army”.

The participation costs would be covered from the Defence Ministry’s budget and would require about 1.2 million litas (EUR 347,000) next year.

The Defence Ministry also suggested the interior system institutions to include some military elements into their exercise scenarios, for instance, convoy of war prisoners or defence of strategic objects.

In case of war, the VIP Protection Department, the Public Security Service and the State Border Guard Service would be assigned to the Armed Forces.
