Under the plan, such advisers will start working at the Lithuanian embassies in Ukraine and the United States, representatives of the Ministry of National Defence told BNS.

Currently, defence advisers only work in international organizations, while embassies have defence attachés.

“The proposal is to shift public servants not only to international organizations but also to embassies. This has to do with the possibility to establish defence adviser (posts) at bilateral embassies. The issue has been agreed upon with the Defence Ministry,” Foreign Vice-Minister Neris Germanas said at the government’s meeting on Wednesday.

The special advisers would be civilian public servants of the defence system, while only military officers can be appointed as defence attachés.

The Foreign Ministry said the adviser would participate in bilateral consultations and collect information on security and defence matters.

The bill will soon be submitted for parliamentary discussion.
