The decision was made on 12 December by Chief of Defence of the Lithuanian Armed Forces Major General Jonas Vytautas Žukas after assessing the security situation.
The chief of defence said that the level of readiness had been increased responding to intensified activity of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation near the territorial waters of the Baltic states. Higher level of readiness was lifted after the activity, which was possibly caused by military exercises in Kaliningrad, stopped.
