Lithuanian expats’ affairs coordination commission to hold its 1st meeting in 2 yrs

The commission last held its meeting in 2016. The government of Prime Minister Saulius Skvernelis considered eliminating the panel after taking office in December of that year.

Government Vice-Chancellor Deividas Matulionis told BNS on the eve of Tuesday’s meeting, which will be chaired by Skvernelis, that the commission will discuss the prospects for the introduction of dual citizenship, the Global Lithuania program for involving Lithuanian expatriates into the state’s life and a demographic, migration and integration strategy that is being drawn up by the government.

The government considered scrapping the commission in 2017, but gave up these plans after the Lithuanian World Community (LWC) voiced concerns that the move would undermine communication between Lithuania’s authorities and the diaspora.

Government officials last fall held an informal meeting with Lithuanians living abroad.
