Lithuanian government earmarks EUR 50,000 for food for Syrian refugees

The money will be transferred to the United Nations (UN) Global Food Program.

“The leader of the European Council, Donald Tusk, recently turned to member-states with a request over the complicated situation of the Syrian refugees,” Foreign Minister Linas Linkevičius said during the government’s meeting.

The European Union is faced with the biggest migration crisis since World War Two. More than 500,000 people have crossed the Mediterranean Sea since the start of the year, in addition to nearly 3,000 who went missing or were killed on the way.

Under the European Union’s distribution programs, Lithuania has committed itself to receiving 1,105 refugees over two years.
