Due to fires raging around Athens, tour operators are changing excursion destinations and schedules for holidaymakers.

“The only change is that excursion destinations and schedules are being changed for tourists on the Peloponnese peninsula,” Inga Aukštuolytė, spokeswoman for Tez Tour, told BNS Lithuania on Tuesday.

There are 197 Tez Tour holidaymakers on the on the Peloponnese peninsula. Local resorts are over 200 km away from Athens.

Another part of Tez Tour holidaymakers are taken to the islands of Rhodes and Crete.

“Life goes on the normal holiday way in these tourist areas,” Aukštuolytė said.

Dovilė Zapkutė, a spokeswoman for Novaturas, told BNS Lithuania the company organizes holiday trips to Greek islands only but Lithuanians travelling in the mainland of the country were also forced to change their excursion plans.

“One group of 29 people is currently on a study trip in mainland Greece and they are continuing their journey on a changed route which is far from the fires,” Zapkutė said.

Some 56 people have died and over 170 have been injured in the recent forest fires in Greece.
