Lithuanian leaders offer condolences over deadly floods in Japan

In her message of condolence to Emperor Akihito, President Dalia Grybauskaitė “offered the support of the Lithuanian people and wished fortitude to the victims’ families, loved ones and everyone affected”.

“She also wished consolidation in continuing rescue operations and the search for missing persons,” the president’s office said in a press release.

Prime Minister Saulius Skvernelis sent his condolences to his Japanese counterpart, Shinzo Abe, wishing him and the nation “strength and fortitude in withstanding the distress”.

“We are shocked and grieved over the tragic loss of lives caused by the recent floods and landslides in Japan,” Skvernelis said in in his message of condolence.

Japan’s government said on Monday that at least 100 people had died in floods and landslides caused by heavy rains in the western part of the country.
