Lithuanian parliament adopts amendments to Consular Statute regarding material assistance

DELFI / Tomas Vinickas

The Statute is supplemented with a provision stipulating that material assistance will be provided, in foreign states, by the Lithuanian government to citizens of the Republic of Lithuania who have contracted a disease or have been injured and who have been affected by an accident or have been victims of a criminal act or other offence. The government will provide material assistance where a victim, citizen of the Republic of Lithuania, has no access to assistance from other sources, and this assistance is repayable.

If material assistance given to a citizen of the Republic of Lithuania by the government is not repaid by the deadline, Lithuania’s minister of foreign affairs will decide on the recovery of this assistance. A decision of the minister will be an enforceable document to be executed in accordance with the procedure laid down by Lithuania’s Code of Civil Procedure of the Republic.

The procedure and deadlines for providing material assistance to citizens of the Republic of Lithuania in foreign states and for repaying assistance will be established by the Government of the Republic of Lithuania.

The amendments will come into effect on 1 September 2015.
