
“Looking into the global markets and South Europe, we have to remember the lessons we went through ourselves and not to repeat the mistakes of irresponsible spending. Fiscal discipline and responsibility must be the key guidance for the adoption of the 2016 budget,” the president said in her message of congratulation, read out in the parliament.
Grybauskaitė also underlined that the pursuit of transparency must be a priority in all areas as well as initiatives on reducing social inequality.
Speaking about the refugee crisis, the head of state said that Lithuania should be ready to help people who need assistance.
The Seimas opened its autumn session on Thursday, with the new social model, a package of laws aimed at liberalizing labour relations and introducing changes to the pension system, as well as the next year’s budget considered key items on the parliamentary agenda.
Under the Lithuanian Constitution, the Seimas’ autumn session starts on September 10 and ends on December 23.
