Lithuanian parlt commission decides not to open probe on MP Mackevič

DELFI / Šarūnas Mažeika

The opposition Homeland Union–Lithuanian Christian Democrats had proposed that the commission look at a row between Mackevič and Polish officials and suspicions of non-transparent use by the association of support from Poland.

The Homeland Union’s Antanas Matulas was the only member of the commission to back the proposal.

The Aid to Poles in the East Foundation has turned to Polish prosecutors over alleged misuse of funds by the Association of Poles in Lithuania, which is headed by Mackevič.

A member of the Lithuanian parliament’s commission said on Wednesday that they should wait for Polish prosecutors to make their decision.

Mackevič has been recently re-elected as chairman of the association. The Zw.lt website has reported that Urszula Doroszewska, the Polish ambassador to Lithuania, asked him to meet with her before the election.

In an interview with the Polish media a day later, Mackevič strongly criticized both the Polish foundation and Doroszewska, saying that the ambassador had pressed him not to run for re-election as the association’s chairman.
