The probe was started based on Majauskas’ complaint that “untrue and defamatory information about him was anonymously spread during a TV news program”.

“The pre-trial investigation was opened under Article 154 (2) of the Criminal Code to establish the factual circumstances of the event,” the Prosecutor’s Office said in a press release.

Under the article, libel is punishable by a fine, arrest or up to two years in prison.

In an interview aired by the Info TV station earlier this month, a young woman, whose name was not disclosed, accused Majauskas of unwelcome sexual behavior toward her in his apartment more than five years ago.

The lawmaker has dismissed the allegation as untrue.
