The Lithuanian Parliament has approved amendments to the law on tobacco control, restricting tobacco companies’ ability to sponsor public events.

So far, the law prohibited promotion of tobacco consumption, while only limiting sponsorship. The amendment completely bans sponsorship and supporting events intended for persons under 18 years old.

Amendments to the law were initiated by Antanas Matulas.

“We used to have the most stringent tobacco and alcohol laws in Europe. When everything was liberalized, it took seven years to become one of the most drinking and smoking nations in Europe and the world. Now we are slowly amending those laws and trying to correct the mistakes made in 2001,” said Matulas.
