Lithuania’s Navy gets new commander

The event was attended by Defence Vice-Minister Antanas Valys and Land Forces Commander Major General Almantas Leika who currently serves as acting chief of defence, senior specialist at the Navy’s division for civilian-military cooperation, Sergeant Audrius Vitkauskas, told BNS.

Macijauskas led the Lithuanian Navy in 1999-2008 and 2010-2015.

Defence Minister Juozas Olekas has said Macijauskas’ replacement had nothing to do with the controversial search and rescue operation in May for a plane that crashed flying over the Baltic Sea en route from Sweden to Lithuania.

Until recently, Mockus, 46, served as chief of staff of the Lithuanian Navy. He has also been the commander of frigate and warship fleet after completing education in Germany, Belgium, the United States and Great Britain.
