“It was a lovely Monday afternoon and my daughter was playing in our blooming garden,” she wrote to DELFI. “We live just outside the town and it’s heaven.

“And suddenly the kids run screaming that the Russians are coming and that they saw Russian jets. The kids, their eyes filled with fear, started asking if the war had begun.

“How should parents constructively explain the situation to their kids at such a sensitive moment when we ourselves were rather frightened? The kids did not fail to see it, it wasn’t until after discussions among ourselves that we could explain it was our allies that they saw.

“But seeds of anxiety have been planted. It’s a fact that we are vulnerable and uncertain, even though we are protected by NATO. No one can assure our safety. Should we be happy or scared?”

In fact, the jets that flew over Turniškės area in Vilnius on Monday afternoon were French military aircraft that made the manoeuvre in order to greet the guests at the French ambassador’s residence on the occasion of the Bastille Day, a French national holiday.
