NATO considers stationing battalions in Baltic states and Poland

DELFI / Šarūnas Mažeika

According to Britain’s The Telegraph, one scenario sees 800-1,000 soldier battalions stationed in Poland, Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia, but a less ambitious plan would invlolve deploying only one battalion in the region.

Germany is worried that such measures would provoke Russia’s response at the time of ceasefire in Ukraine, but Berlin would agree to one battalion in the region.

Moscow is expected to protest deployment of larger military forces, saying it would be a violation of the 1994 agreement which prohibits deploying large military forces in border areas.

The Minister of National Defence Juozas Olekas has told the LRT television that Lithuania has all the infrastructure and is ready to host a full NATO battalion.
