“Lithuania cannot boast of a long oyster eating tradition, but we are intent on busting some myths, introducing new traditions and making the oyster tasting tradition take root in Lithuania,” says Indrė Leikauskė, the organizer of the festival. “The Oyster Festival is much more than a celebration of food. Lithuania is a maritime country, so who knows, perhaps the Oyster Festival will encourage farmers to set up oyster farms along the Lithuanian coast.”
Thirty-four restaurants in Vilnius and other towns are on the map of this year’s festival, offering a wide variety of oyster dishes to dip into. Want to know how to do it properly? Workshops to be held on November 24-26 in Vilnius, Kaunas, and Klaipėda will share some tips and tricks in the art and science of savouring this mollusk. Attendants will be greeted by Žilvinas Pupkus, an apprentice of the world oyster opening champion Marcel Lesoille, who will explain the benefits of eating oysters and how to best enjoy them.
The Halė market in central Vilnius is hosting the first ever oyster market organized by the Assorti delicatessen shop.
Organizers of the Oyster Festival assure that it will have plenty to offer to both connoisseurs and those yet to be introduced to the subtleties of seafood culture, hoping to turn it into an annual event.
