He told BNS Lithuania that over 50 well-known public figures are calling on him to seek the presidential post.

“I’m considering it since there’s a lot of support. I cannot respond immediately, several hours after the announcement. I am certainly considering it,” he told BNS Lihuania.

Juozaitis said he would make up his mind by the fall.

Over 50 writers, other artists, scientists, signatories to the Act of Restoration of Lithuania’s Independence of March 11 and participants of the Sąjūdis signed an open letter, published on Monday and calling on him to return to political activity and run for president.

Juozatis has a doctoral degree in philosophy from Vilnius University. He won a bronze medal in swimming during the 1986 Montreal Olympics. He was one of the initiators of the Sąjūdis and was editor-in-chief and publisher of several cultural publications. Juozaitis served as an adviser on education to then Prime Minister Algirdas Brazauskas in 2001–2003. He served as Lithuania’s cultural attaché in the Russian region of Kaliningrad in 2004–2009 and was a deputy president of Lithuania’s International Olympic Committee in 2012–2017.
