Skvernelis will attend a Lithuanian-language church service and meet with the local community and priests.

Deividas Matulionis, the prime minister’s foreign policy adviser, says that it was the prime minister’s informal visit to meet with the Punsk Lithuanian community. In his words, Skvernelis’ official visit to Poland is planned for September, including a face-to-face meeting with Poland’s Prime Minister Beata Szydlo.

“This will be an informal visit to Punsk, it should not be linked with the official visit, furthermore, we are going to Poland in early September for official meetings. I believe there should be no link between the two visits. The Assumption Day for Punsk residents, the most important festival of the year. I believe visiting them is a nice thing to do, especially since the meeting with the local administration will address all issues in connection to the Lithuanian community in Poland,” Matulionis told BNS.

Skvernelis and Szydlo have attended bilateral meetings during international events, however, none of them have held an official or a working visit to the neighboring state.
