President convenes initial Seimas meeting on November 14

The first meeting will be presided over by the oldest MP – Juozas Imbrasas of the Order and Justice party.

Under the Seimas statute, all elected MPs have to take oaths during the first meeting and elect the parliamentary speaker, with the post probably filled by a candidate of the Lithuanian Peasant and Green Union that won the elections.

According to the Constitution, after the newly-elected Seimas takes office and the outgoing government returns its mandate, the president has 15 days to submit the candidate for the new prime minister before the parliament. The Peasant and Green Union has listed Saulius Skvernelis, Lithuania’s former police chief and interior minister, as the only candidate for the post.

After securing 56 mandates in Lithuania’s 141-seat parliament during the elections in October, the Lithuanian Peasant and Green Union is holding coalition talks with the Social Democrats that won 17 mandates in the elections.

The conservative Homeland Union – Lithuanian Christian Democrats won 31, the Liberal Movement won 14. mandates, the Electoral Action of Poles in Lithuania – Union of Christian Families and the Order and Justice party got eight mandates each. The Labor Party won two mandates, followed by the Lithuanian Green Union, the Center Union and the List of Lithuania party with one each. Two mandates were won by independent candidates.
