During their meeting on Monday, the president and the newly appointed ambassador discussed political and economic cooperation between Lithuania and Austria as well as the development of cultural ties.

Dalia Grybauskaitė noted that it was necessary to build on the momentum of bilateral trade which had been growing for the past four years in a row. She pointed out that both countries were strongly connected by their determination to advance EU macro-regional strategies.

According to the President, the development of cultural contacts with Austria remains a priority task. Public opinion polls show that most Austrians identify Lithuania with culture and science. Cultural and youth exchanges are also on top of our agenda, the President said.

Before her appointment to Austria, Loreta Zakarevičienė was Lithuanian ambassador to Poland. She started her diplomatic career in 2000, serving at the Lithuanian Mission to NATO and the Lithuanian Embassy in Moldova. The Ambassador, a mathematician, had also worked as spokesperson to the parliamentary speaker and foreign policy adviser to the Prime Minister.
