The ambassador was presented with a strong protest over the repeated actions of Russia’s military ships in Lithuania’s exclusive economic zone in the Baltic Sea, which were against the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) and disturbed peaceful shipping and economic activities.
As reported, on Thursday, quoting an on-going military exercise, Russia’s military ships ordered a ship, keeping watch on the NordBalt cable laying works in the Baltic Sea, to leave the zone.
Until the cable is not deep in the seabed and uncovered with sand, a special ship is keeping watch in the interconnection site in order to warn other nearby vessels if they come too close so that they do not harm the cable with their fishing equipment and anchors.
Similar accidents with Russia’s military ships have occurred already three times this year: on 19 March, 10 April and 24 April. Lithuania’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs responded to them with protest notes.
