Swedish royal couple arrives in Vilnius

This is the first state visit of Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden and his wife Queen Silvia since 1992. The royal family paid a non-state visit to Lithuania in 2009.

According to Lithuanian President Dalia Grybauskaitė, Lithuania and Sweden have been tied by close political and cultural links since the House of Vasa times, while Sweden is important to today’s Lithuania both security-wise and economy-wise.

“These are not just symbols. This country is the biggest investor in Lithuania. Sweden will also ensure independent energy supply to us,” the president said ahead of the official welcoming ceremony.

The beginning of the visit will be marked by a meeting between President Dalia Grybauskaitė and King Carl XVI Gustaf with Queen Silvia of Sweden.

Along with the royal couple, Sweden’s ministers of foreign affairs, enterprise, and defence and the Swedish business delegation of representatives of the country’s largest companies came to Lithuania.
