“We will definitely come to Tallinn, it is 100-percent certain,” said Jambu Palaniappan, regional head for one of the world’s most successful start-up, when visiting Estonia on Tuesday. The company does not tell the specific date, but the service will be launched here in the near future.
“People can expect [opening] from us this summer,” was the most accurate promise that Palaniappan gave in an interview. According to Eesti Paevaleht, the US technology company can actually push the virtual start-button of its service already in the coming weeks.
Uber is a Silicon Valley company that provides technology to connect drivers and passengers. It sounds like a taxi company, but Uber’s finesse lies in the fact that, using the company’s mobile application, basically every car owner can make money by sharing a ride. For the passenger, the service would be cheaper than taxi service.
Estonian economy and infrastructure minister Kristen Michal told Postimees that Estonia was open to new digital solutions aimed at offering people innovative services. “Our interest is that the consumer gets a service that is of good quality and corresponds to Estonian rules.
“The new public transport law that comes in force in autumn enables, besides taxi transport, to provide occasional transport service with passenger cars by way of entrepreneurship, if the service provider has the appropriate operating permit, and that creates flexible opportunities for providing Uber’s services in Estonia,” said Michal after meeting Uber’s managers Mark MacGann, Jambu Palaniappan and Mateusz Litewski.
