Capping a long and trying day in parliament, the sole remaining candidate for president, Defence Minister Raimonds Vejonis (Greens/Farmers), emerged victorious in the fifth vote, with 55 ballots cast for him. He will assume the office of the president, succeeding Andris Berzins.

44 MPs voted against Vejonis in the final vote, while one voting ticket was deemed invalid and one MP did not participate in the vote.

Current President Andris Berzins’ third term in office ends on 7 July.

Vejonis will become the fifth Latvian president since the restoration of independence and ninth ever in Latvia’s history.
