Vilnius’ Iceland Street goes Icelandic

The plaque was unveiled by Vilnius mayor Remigijus Šimašius and former Foreign Affairs Minister of Iceland, politician, diplomat and Vilnius honorary citizen Dr Jon Baldvin Hannibalsson.

“We gratefully remember what this country has done for Lithuania. We have Iceland street, and now – a plaque with the street‘s name in Icelandic so that everyone who comes here would feel respected and welcome,” said Šimašius.

On February 11, 1991, Iceland was the first country to recognize Lithuania’s independence and Lithuania and Iceland have longstanding strong and friendly diplomatic relations. In the same year, in August, an agreement was signed between Lithuania and Iceland on economic and trade cooperation and the establishment of diplomatic relations.

The event was also attended by the Honorary Consul of Iceland Vaidotas Sankalas, Austrian Ambassador Johann Spitzer, Norwegian Ambassador Malm Dag Halvorsen, the Ambassador of Sweden Cecilia Barbro Ruthström-Ruim and German Ambassador Jutta Schmitz.
