The third phase of the Vilnius western bypass could be completed as early as this year with the road expected be opened to traffic immediately thereafter, according to Vilnius Major Remigijus Simasius.

“Works are progressing ahead of schedule. If everything goes smoothly the bypass should be opened this year. As regards financing, everything is going smoothly, too. We’ve received the money from the European Union,” he said.

Chief executive of Kauno Tilta Aldas Rusevicius, the general contractor for the third phase of the bypass, said that more than 50% of the construction works had already been carried out.

“We hope that our commitment to open the road to traffic as early as this year will be implemented,” he said.

Transport Minister Rimantas Sinkevicius on Wednesday signed an order allocating €84 million from EU funds.

The third phase of the western bypass was expected to be completed in the first quarter of 2017. The third phase will connect the Vilnius–Kaunas–Klaipeda and Vilnius–Panevezys routes.
