As of Thursday, 928 Lithuanian citizens had already expressed their wish to voluntarily perform military service. This year, Lithuanian plans to conscript 3,000 young men aged 19-26.
According to the ministry, conscription lists will be compiled at the ministry on Monday, produced using a piece of software with a random number generator. The procedure will be observed by National Defence Minister Juozas Olekas and Artūras Paulauskas, chairman of the parliamentary Committee on National Security and Defence, as well as eight representatives of the public.
In response to recent geopolitical threats arising from Russia’s aggression against Ukraine, the Seimas of Lithuania adopted amendments and restored mandatory military service in March.
