Conscripts will only account for one-sixth of Lithuanian army

DELFI / Mindaugas Ažušilis

“If we believe that in 2021 there will be about 24,000 Lithuanian troops, then up to 4,000 of them will be conscripts – those who will only serve for nine months. Contracts for other soldiers will be for about 4 years,” said Minister Olekas.

On Monday the State Defence Council decided to bring back compulsory military service and to designate an additional €150 million for national defence next year.

According to the minister, the specific duration of conscription has not yet been decided.
