Prime Minister Saulius Skvernelis said on the eve of the meeting that it was held to give ministers an impression of the challenges of the protection of the eastern border.

“For a long time, the border was not getting the attention it deserves in light of the geopolitical situation,” Skvernelis told the national radio LRT.

The Lithuanian checkpoint on the border with Belarus is based next to Medininkai.

Sworn in a few months ago, the government has pledged to update protection of Lithuania’s border with Russia and Belarus to modern measures by 2020, including fences built along the border.
