Lithuania marked Germany’s National Day of Mourning

The ceremony in Vingio Park and in Antakalnio Cemetery was attended by Minister of National Defence Juozas Olekas, Ambassador of Germany in Lithuania Jutta Schmitz, members of parliament and foreign ambassadors.

In the Soldiers’ Cemetery in Vingio Park, flowers were laid at the memorial to German soldiers that perished in the First and Second World Wars. The military orchestra performed the Lithuanian and German anthems.

Later, flowers were laid in Antakalnio Cemetery to German soldiers fallen during the First World War. Respects were also paid to Lithuanian freedom fighters.

1,300 German soldiers and 900 soldiers from other countries who died in the First World War are buried in the military cemetery in Vilnius Vingio Park. Some 2,000 more German soldiers who died in the Second World War are buried nearby.
