King Mindaugas was crowned on July 6, 1253, which finalized the establishment of the State of Lithuania, and Lithuania was then recognized by the Christendom.
“By choosing the path towards Europe, King Mindaugas laid the foundations for the establishment of our independent state. Let us be proud of our history, and we will never allow anyone to diminish it,” Lithuanian President Dalia Grybauskaitė said in a statement.
On the occasion, the president will bestow state decorations upon Lithuanian and foreign citizens.
At midday, the president will attend a solemn national flag raising ceremony in Simonas Daukantas Square in central Vilnius and congratulate people of Lithuania. Commemorative events will also be held in Lithuania’s other majors cities of Kaunas and Klaipėda.
At 9 p.m., Lithuanian residents and Lithuanians living abroad are invited to sing Lithuania’s national anthem together around the world. Prime Minister Algirdas Butkevičius plans to join celebrations in central Vilnius and sing the anthem with people at Vincas Kudirka Monument.
