Lithuania to mark Jewish Genocide Memorial Day

On Monday, events will take place to mark 70 years since the liquidation of the Kaunas ghetto. Participants of the ceremony at the Kaunas 9th Fort will include Government Chancellor Alminas Mačiulis and leader of the Lithuanian Jewish Community Faina Kukliansky. In the afternoon, presentation of a monograph Kaunas Ghetto 1941-1944 by historian Arūnas Bubnys will be held at the premises of the Lithuanian Jewish Community.

Memorial events on Tuesday will take place at the parliament and the mass massacre sites in Paneriai near Vilnius.

The National Memorial Day for the Genocide Victims of the Lithuanian Jews is officially marked on 23 September, the day of liquidation of the Vilnius Ghetto in 1943.

About 90 percent of Lithuania’s pre-war Jewish population of over 200,000 perished during the Holocaust.
