The amendments were supported by 68 MPs, nobody voted against and 20 MPs abstained, the press service of the Seimas reports.

The tax on landfill waste pollution, just like the currently applied tax on polluting the environment with product and/or packaging waste, will be levied by the national government. The landfill tax will be paid by landfill site operators and the size of the levy will depend on the amount of de facto landfilled waste during a certain period of time. Landfill operators will be exempt from the landfill tax for the removal of phospho-gypsum plaster waste.

With a view to encouraging more diversified management, treatment and recycling of waste for reuse, a rate of EUR 21.72 per ton of non-hazardous landfilled waste will be applied in 2016 and its level will be annually increased to reach EUR 44.89 per ton.

A landfill tax rate of EUR 47.79 per ton will be applied to landfilled hazardous waste in 2016 to be gradually increased until it reaches EUR 70.96 per ton in 2020.
