Lithuanian Foreign Minister: Sweden important partner in ensuring regional security

According to the press release, Linkevičius met with Swedish Riksdag (parliament) Speaker Urban Ahlin in Vilnius on Thursday and discussed relevant bilateral and international policy matters.
“Cooperation with Sweden and other Nordic and Baltic states is one of the most important priorities for Lithuania,” said the Lithuanian diplomacy chief.

In the discussion of the situation in Ukraine, the two officials agreed to continue support to Ukraine and stick to the strong position towards Russia. Linkevičius accentuated Sweden is a very important partner in ensuring regional security.

“We are faced with very similar threats, therefore, should act in a coordinated manner,” the Lithuanian minister added.

He underlined superb bilateral ties and noted successful development of economic relations. Sweden ranks 1st in terms of investment in Lithuania. Linkevičius applauded the successful advancement of the Lithuania-Sweden power link project NordBalt and the planned connection between the two electricity markets in early 2016. The Lithuanian official invited Sweden to join the Viking container train project.

Linkevičius invited the Swedish parliamentary speaker to attend the traditional Snow Meeting to be held in Trakai early next year.

This is Ahlin’s first visit to Lithuania following the Sept. 14 Riksdag elections.
