Under the draft resolution, the parliament “celebrates the 25-year anniversary of Lithuania’s restored independence and with great sorrow marks the death of Boris Nemtsov, a person who was close to Lithuania”.
“Nemtsov was one of the main people who gave hope that Russia would one day turn towards democracy. Nemtsov was to be one of the keynote speakers at the international parliamentary meeting organized by the Parliamentary Forum for Democracy on the topic of Worldwide Democracy Situation – Challenges to Democracy and Future Perspectives. Nemtsov’s death is a loss to the whole free world and its hopes of seeing positive changes in Russia,” reads the draft document.
At the same time, the resolution should also call upon the international community to pressure Russia for immediate investigation of the crime and bringing the culprits to justice.
Nemtsov, an ardent critic of Russian President Vladimir Putin, was murdered near the Kremlin in late hours of 27 February.
Lithuania’s former prime minister Andrius Kubilius has said Nemtsov considered applying for political asylum in Lithuania in 2012.
