This was pointed out by Gediminas Kirkilas, Deputy Speaker of the Seimas and Chair of the Committee on European Affairs, and Benediktas Juodka, Chair of the Committee on Foreign Affairs, at the meeting with Radojko Bogojević, Serbian Ambassador to the Republic of Lithuania, visiting the Seimas.

Lithuania supports Serbia’s integration into the EU, and the Lithuanian Presidency of the Council of the EU in the second half of 2013 contributed to enabling Serbia to start its EU accession talks on 21 January 2014. The EU’s decision to open negotiations was taken and the negotiating mandate was approved during the Lithuanian Presidency.

Moreover, Lithuania provides expert support to Serbia in carrying out its democratic reforms accompanying the EU integration process. According to the bilateral memorandum of cooperation signed between the Lithuanian and Serbian foreign ministries in 2013, both countries are working together as Serbia transposes the EU acquis into its national law.
