The president presented a total of 51 Life Saving Crosses.
“Today we pay tribute to humanity which ignored regimes and wars. We pay our honours to those who considered lives of their neighbours or complete strangers more important than their own safety,” the president said.
Grybauskaitė stressed that heroic deeds done back then by individuals or entire villages only prove that Lithuania does not categorise its people according to ethnicity or religious belief and even in the roughest times defend those who made their homeland in Lithuania.
