Lithuanians show solidarity with Poland in “apple protest” outside Russian Embassy

Carrying bags of apples from Poland, about a dozen people gathered outside the Russian Embassy after the campaign was publicized in social networks.

Journalist and writer Andrius Tapinas, one of the organizers of the protest action, said that the spontaneous initiative emerged in the light of the reaction in Poland where support to Polish apples has been expressed by government officials and celebrities.

“We keep talking about the need to get along with the neighbours. I thought they needed this minor support,” Tapinas said.

On Wednesday, Russia announced plans to halt imports of apples, pears, plums and cabbage from Poland as of Friday.

Russia maintains that the decision has been made in the light of production quality. However, Poland says that this is Moscow’s move to punish Poland for its support to Ukraine.
