“Today is his first day in office,” Tomas Berzinskas, spokesman for the prime minister, told BNS.

Matulionis headed Lithuania’s diplomatic mission in Berlin for 4.5 years. Before the ambassadorial appointment, he served as chancellor in the government of Andrius Kubilius.

Matulionis, 53, is one of Lithuania’s most experienced diplomats who started his career at the Foreign Ministry in 1991.
