NATO fighter-jets in Lithuania take off once last week

According to the press release, the jets were used due to an identified Russian military electronic intelligence aircraft IL-20 observed in the international air-space above neutral waters close to the Baltic states.

The aircraft was pursuing a plan, which specified a different type of an airplane, and had its transponder switched off.

No violations of the Lithuanian national air-space were reported last week. In the week before that, Russian airplanes were recorded on four occasions.

On Mondays, Lithuania’s Defence Ministry is publishing data about Russian warships causing scramble of NATO fighter-jets from Air Force Aviation Base in Šiauliai, northern Lithuania. More than 100 scrambles occurred this year.
