NATO jets scrambled from Lithuania 3 times last week over Russian airplanes

On June 1, NATO fighter aircraft identified and escorted a Tu-154 Russian aircraft heading for the Russian Kaliningrad region from mainland Russia, which was flying in the international air-space over the Baltic Sea with no pre-filed flight plan, had its onboard transponder switched on and maintained radio communication with the air traffic control centre, the Lithuanian Ministry of National Defence said.

On June 2, NATO fighter-jets reportedly scrambled twice to intercept military aircraft of the Russian Federation: an IL-76 military heavy transport aircraft and an AN-72 light military transport aircraft. Both of them were flying in the international air-space over the Baltic Sea from mainland Russia towards Kaliningrad without pre-filed flight plans, using their onboard transponders and maintaining radio communication with the air traffic control centre.

In Lithuania, the NATO air-policing mission is carried out by Norway and Italy, while British jets guard the Baltic skies from Estonia and Belgian patrol it from Poland.
