The US troops have been dispatched to Lithuania from the US regiment based in Vilseck, Germany. Some 130 troops are arriving in Lithuania on Monday, while the rest will come in Thursday. The rotation will consist of 170 soldiers in total.

The US troops will take part in joint training with Lithuanian soldiers in Rukla, central Lithuania. They are also bringing military vehicles that are to be shipped to Klaipėda Port on January 14-15.

The US has been sending rotating troops to the Baltic states and Poland since spring 2014 as part of Operation Atlantic Resolve. The operation was initiated following Russia’s aggression in Ukraine that raised security concerns in the region.
