Prime minister says no discussions on closing Lithuanian borders

“So far, we have only had a telephone conversation with the interior minister who is now in Brussels and we definitely did not discuss border closing in Lithuania. We have talked about the reinforcement of the EU’s external borders and restrictions to refugees flocking to the EU member-states,” Butkevičius told reporters at the Seimas on Tuesday.

Interior Minister Saulius Skvernelis, who attended the crisis meeting of the EU home affairs ministers, says that the meeting agreed that the focus should be on eliminating the causes of the current refugee crisis rather than assigning specific numbers of refugees for each EU state.

According to Skvernelis, the ministers discussed efficient protection of the EU’s external borders, emergence of the so-called hot spots in Greece, refugee return policy and the list of safe countries, but all the further steps regarding these measures will be taken up in the next Council of ministers.
