Russia ‘trying to back away from Minsk deal’ – Lithuanian minister

Linas Linkevičius

“Perhaps this is seeking and finding a pretext for retreating from the Minsk agreement. I see a serious danger in this. If Russia accuses the Ukrainian side of violating (the deal) and says that the Minsk process has no prospects to continue, then we lose the only tool that was still used to regulate this conflict. Great damage would be done then,” he told Žinių Radijas on Tuesday.

Linkevičius thinks that Moscow’s actions could also be influenced by pre-election moods in Russia.

“A lot of factors (may be in play), such as the upcoming elections in Russia, which perhaps require some consolidation, and the American situation, which is now focused on domestic politics and elections. (There is) increased activity not only on Ukrainian issues, but in the Middle East as well as,” the minister said.
