In a vote of 100 to one with seven abstentions, the Seimas passed a resolution to initiate the proceedings and to turn to the Constitutional Court for its opinion on whether Bastys’ specific actions listed in the impeachment commission’s conclusion run counter to the Constitution.

The parliament earlier in the day endorsed the special commission’s conclusion stating that there are grounds for opening impeachment proceedings against Bastys for grossly breaching the oath and grossly violating the Constitution

The commission says in its conclusion that Bastys breached the oath by concealing his ties with Piotr Voyeiko, a former KGB agent, by giving conflicting statements and explanations to the State Security Department and the Seimas Committee on National Security and Defense on whether he knew that Voyeiko was working for KGB, and by helping to arrange publicly unannounced meetings between people from Russia’s state nuclear energy corporation Rosatom and top officials of Lithuanian state authorities.
