“We recognize the importance of solidarity and shared responsibility in solving the refugee crisis. We welcome the European Commission’s proposals to better manage the migration flows and ensure the prevention of further aggravations, we also look forward to the decisions by the Interior Ministers Council,” said the PM.

The vice-president of the European Commission has noted that an Extraordinary Home Affairs Council will be held on 22 September to primarily focus on resettlement issues. A regular meeting between the interior ministers has been scheduled to take place in October.

Butkevičius and Mogherini have also discussed the Eastern Partnership issues, the situation in Ukraine and EU’s support for this country. According to Butkevičius, Ukraine takes necessary measures to comply with the Minsk Agreements, but it is also very important to encourage internal reforms in that country, setting realistic goals within a realistic time-frame.

The head of Government has also highlighted the need for strengthened strategic communications through improved dissemination of information and unanimous response on the part of the EU member states in cases of misinformation.

The PM has also called for increased EU cooperation as regards coordination and exchange of information on energy security.
